THE 1920’s

2008

With the Great War now history, America now faced the challenges, both home and abroad, of being one of the world’s great powers.  Political shifts throughout Europe would ripple across the United States as workers began to step out from behind the industrialists of prior generations.  Technological advances fueled the passion of being “American”, a passion that included wealth and a desire for modern conveniences.  Theology would be put to the test, as would race relations with the growth of the Harlem Renaissance.  Sports and leisure activities dominated a society that was becoming ever more social, even with prohibition.  Crime bosses turned into folk heroes, adventurers became legends, and the drive for wealth turned many into multi-millionaires.

Unchecked greediness, however, was leading not only the country, but the entire world, down a path toward financial ruin.  The excesses of the “Roaring 20’s” would not make it out of the decade.  To balance the scales, a financial crisis never before seen in human history would rip into a society that had lost its self-sufficiency.  The Great Depression ushered in a decade ripe for those bent on world domination.
